Passive Sampling Techniques
Passive sampling refers to fishing gear that is stationary in the water.Fish must swim to passive sampling gears to be captured. Some common passive sampling techniques include fyke nets, gill nets and minnow traps. These gear types are set in targeted habitats and left in the water for a period of time before they are collected. All sampling techniques have their advantages and disadvantages and techniques vary in efficiency across fish species, water turbidity, depth, flow, etc. In the end, a variety of sampling techniques may be needed to properly capture the target species or characterize the entire fish community. |
