Net Repair

Description

Nets, ropes, and lines will need repair eventually. This module explains the tools materials, and methods applied to making simple repairs on nets and lines. See Lines module for techniques to add eyes or loops to the end of lines.

Tools for Repair

Tools and twine used for net repair.

Scissors

  • Cutting netting, line, twine
  • Example: OLFA Brand

Knifes

  • Rough steel for hard to cut items
  • Finer cutting: example Morakniv
  • Must have sharpening tools to keep knife sharp
  • Ceramic recommended for finer cutting blades
  • Diamond edged butcher steel for rough cutting blades

Tile Cutters

  • Cutting rope
  • Wrap rope with electrical tape and cut at the taped portion
  • Electrical pliers (= cable cutters)
  • Cutting old, tarred, rougher, harder rope
  • Example: Klein brand

Fencing pliers (crescent, modified)

  • Cutting netting knots, grips, etc. in close quarters, as cutting knots off lines
  • Can be slightly sharpened

H-needle

  • Ruler (English and Metric) preferred over tape measure, plastic works but metal is better

Twines

Braided Nylon (good repair size #15) is a good repair twine, it makes good tight knots that stay in-place; Dyneema (example size #4) – since so strong, you can use a smaller diameter twine and so grips better; cotton twine is good to include in specific places to lessen ghost fishing possibility if the net is lost.
