Egg Shipment: One more thing to be Thankful For

Written By

Thanksgiving is a great time to reflect upon the many blessings in life, spend time with family, and eat way too much! This year, one of those blessings arrived at Norfork National Fish Hatchery in the form of tiny, orange rainbow trout eggs. Sonny Brassfield (motor vehicle operator) traveled to Erwin National Fish Hatchery during the holiday week, picking up over 1.6 million rainbow trout eggs. 602,000 were distributed to Jim Hinkle State Fish Hatchery (301k) and Mammoth Spring National Fish Hatchery (301K) in Mammoth Spring, AR. The remaining 1 million or so eggs were brought back to Norfork National Fish Hatchery on Wednesday, November 26th.

Egg shipments are nothing new to Norfork National Fish Hatchery, but this shipment was received with a little extra gratitude. This fall, Norfork experienced extremely high mortality, with few fish surviving. This shipment of eggs marks the beginning of a new production cycle. They bring a positive outlook to refilling raceways, and getting back to the production numbers the hatchery is well known for. For most folks, a bunch of rainbow trout eggs aren’t on the list of things to be thankful for. However, for many fisherman, tourists, local resorts, professional guides, and Norfork NFH employees, they found a place on the list this year!
