Protection, Conservation, Service...Since 1903
Since the first Federal Game Warden Paul Kroegel began patrolling Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge in 1903, law enforcement has been an integral facet of conservation management. A century later, these law enforcement officers are known as a Federal Wildlife Officer. Though the name changed, the goal remains the same: conserving the Nation’s fish, wildlife and other natural resources while serving and protecting the public.
Federal Wildlife Officers are entrusted with protecting natural resources, visitors and employees. Law enforcement roles include investigating suspected violations, issuing citations, making arrests and testifying in court.
Please follow all rules and regulations outlined in the refuge brochure when visiting. There are also specific regulations for hunting and fishing in Santee National Wildlife Refuge. Please ensure you read and understand all of the regulations prior to your visit.
When reporting violations try to provide as much information as possible, such as:
- What happened
- Where it happened, being as specific as possible
- Who was involved, describing persons (names if known), vehicles (license numbers), names of other witnesses
- When did it happen (date and time are very important)
