Partnered with Friend of Fungi Farm and Russell County Public Library, Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery facilitated the 3rd Mushroom Grow Bag Workshop!
With 27 participants, this workshop was full of eager mycologists to be! Eric Sanders of Friend of Fungi farm shared insight on his processes to grow mushrooms for the local farmer's market, the science behind fungi cultivation, and instructions on how to ensure a bountiful harvest from the inoculated grow bags. Friend of Fungi Farm specializes in commercial growing of several species of culinary mushrooms including oysters, lions mane, chestnuts, and king trumpets. Eric also detailed his processes for making mushroom coffee, extracts, fermented hot sauce, and seasonings, encouraging attendees to get creative with their harvests!
Each attendee left with a grow bag inoculated with either oyster (pleurotus ostreatus) or lion's mane mushrooms (herecium erinaceus) expected to flush ~3 pounds of fruit, and recipe cards.
Participants were then instructed on how to ensure annual harvests by reusing the spores and mycelium from their bag once they have completed their fruiting. By placing the crumbled substrate in buckets, laundry baskets, etc. outside layered with straw, the mycelium can spread and produce more fruit with the appropriate environmental conditions.
If you missed this workshop, keep an eye out for March 2027!
