Species that are considered uncertain risk need a more in-depth assessment beyond the Risk Summary to better define the species’ risk to U.S. environments.
Heteropneustes microps is native to Sri Lanka and India and is not known to have been introduced outside of its native range. The species has been the subject of a taxonomic debate and some authors have considered the name to be a synonym for H. fossilis, although recent genetic data suggest that the two taxa are indeed distinct species. H. microps has a low climate match to the United States overall, with medium climate match in southern Florida. Overall risk assessment category for this species is uncertain.
