Three Brown Pelicans

Pictured are three brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) on Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Standing along the ocean shore you'll often see long lines of brown pelicans riding the air current just above the top of the wave line. You may also see them make dramatic dives straight down from high up into the water to stun and capture fish for meals.

The mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working with others to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.
