Black Bear

The black bear (Ursus americanus) population on Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge does not hibernate during the winter months, as do black bears living in the frozen northern states and Canada. In fact this large example of beardom looks like it's been eating well all winter. Male bears can get as large as 900 lbs. and females top out at about 500 lbs.
