The banks of Hatchery Creek were filled with laughter, excitement, and unforgettable memories during our annual Reaching for Rainbows Kids Fishing Derby at Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery. Co-sponsored by the Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery, Inc., this special event was dedicated to children with special needs from seven school districts across the region.
Over the course of two beautiful days, more than four hundred students, teachers, and helpers joined us for a fun-filled celebration of fishing, food, and friendship. On Wednesday, we welcomed participants from Wayne, Casey, Cumberland, and Metcalfe counties. Then on Thursday, students from Clinton, Adair, and Russell counties took their turn casting lines and making memories!
Each day began with an exciting morning of fishing in the crystal-clear waters of Hatchery Creek. Thanks to the support of our incredible team of volunteers, every child had a helping hand, and many were rewarded with their very first fish! Squeals of joy and laughter echoed along the stream bank as countless fish were reeled in.
Following the fishing, everyone was treated to a delicious lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, dessert, and drinks; all served fresh and free of charge! A highlight of the event was the distribution of our beloved “Reaching for Rainbows” t-shirts, handed out to every attendee. Each special needs child also received a commemorative medallion, a keepsake of their incredible day at the Hatchery.
None of this would have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors and donors, and the tireless effort of our volunteers. From setup and fishing assistance to food service and cleanup, these dedicated individuals made it all happen.
Events like the Reaching for Rainbows Kids Fishing Derby remind us of the power of community, compassion, and the simple joy of casting a line with friends. Thank you to everyone who played a part in making this year’s derby such a success!
