Overview

Nelson’s Checker-mallow is a tall, perennial herb in the mallow family, known for its striking lavender to deep pink flowers. It typically blooms from May to July, though flowering can extend into early September, depending on environmental conditions.

This species is found in a variety of prairie habitats across Oregon’s Willamette Valley and Coast Range, as well as in southwestern Washington. It typically grows along streams, in wet meadows, and even along roadsides near stream crossings where non-native plants are present.

Thanks to successful conservation efforts, Nelson’s Checker-mallow was removed from the federal Endangered Species List in 2023. Although it was delisted due to recovery, it is monitored under the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s post-delisting monitoring plan to ensure its continued recovery.
