Visitors of all ages and abilities enjoy exploring the trail system at the Refuge. All hiking trails except the climb to the top of White Horse Hill originate at the visitor center parking lot. A map is available on the main kiosk and is also posted at every intersection along the trail with a "you are here" indicator. To reduce litter along the trails, visitors are encouraged to take a photo of the map.

For the adventurous visitor, a wooden stairway will take you up the 300-foot climb to the top of White Horse Hill. From the peak, you will enjoy a vast open view to the south overlooking the Refuge and Spirit Lake Nation. The town of Fort Totten is also visible from the top. You may be able to pick out the Fort Totten State Historic Site, a military post built in 1867, also a primary visitor attraction in the area.
