A diverse class of children look through microscopes on a table set up outside in a forest

Through a formal partnership between Devils Lake Central Middle School and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, 5th-grade students and their teachers from Central Middle School in Devils Lake utilize both the indoor classrooms and outdoor facilities the entire school year for instruction of math, social studies, language, and science. Through the partnership, standard 5th-grade curriculum is integrated to include outdoor learning opportunities base on the study of place.

Other area schools are welcome to use the trail system and outdoor spaces that are open to the public for their outdoor learning adventures. Teachers are encouraged to call ahead or email the Refuge staff to schedule their visit. This helps us avoid congestion on the trails and parking lot. All school visits are planned and led by the classroom teacher. Please review and follow the guidelines provided by email when you schedule your visit. Also, to avoid conflict with the refuge's formal education program, visiting classrooms are encouraged to schedule their trip in the afternoon when possible Monday-Thursday. If necessary, school groups can be accommodated in the morning - typically on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday.
