Wetland Resources: Mississippi

Wetlands occupy more than 13 percent of the surface area in Mississippi and have greatly influenced the development of the state. The first European settlers found large tracts of bottom-land forests (forested wetlands) in the swamps bordering the Mississippi River and other river systems and in the marshes (emergent wetlands) and swamps (forested and scrub-shrub wetlands) along the Gulf of Mexico.
