Rediscovery of the B17 Crash Site

On July 30, 1944, thirteen B-17s were performing a mock-bombing exercise when they encountered a thunderstorm while approaching Tallahassee. One B-17 suffered structural failure and crashed in the St. Marks Refuge.

Of the 10 men on board, only one was able to parachute to safety.

Over time, the location of the crash site was forgotten—until it was rediscovered in 2011 by St. Marks Refuge fire crew member Travis Pollard, whose grandfather served as a B-17 crew member during World War II.

As part of our Second Sunday Talk series, Travis will share the story of his rediscovery on Sunday, May 11th, at 2 PM at the Environmental Education Building.

Attendance is free, but seating is strictly limited to 35 attendees. We strongly encourage you to register online to guarantee a spot.
