May 22, 2024: Floating Wetlands Implementation

"Floating wetlands" are man-made islands composed of native aquatic plants that mimic the function of real wetlands, on the school's stormwater retention pond. These mini-ecosystems are meant to replicate the Everglades ecosystem on a microscale, introduce the school community to habitat restoration techniques and urban green infrastructure, and provide a living laboratory for the students as they conduct water quality assessments, biodiversity studies, and continuously monitor the islands' plant communities. This is a partnership between the ARM Loxahatchee NWR Urban team, Friends of Loxahatchee NWR, and the SouthTech Academy and we are so excited to celebrate this momentous occasion with everyone.

10:00 am to 11:00 am - Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at SouthTech Academy

See the floating wetlands in action at the SouthTech academy! 6161 W Woolbright Road, Boynton Beach, FL 33437.

5:00 pm - 6:30 pm: Floating Wetlands Presentation by Dr. Bill Strosnider and Levi McKercher

Dr. Bill Strosnider and Levi McKercher are two ecological engineers that will discuss their research surrounding the ecosystem benefits of floating wetlands. The presentation will be followed with questions and a meet and greet. This presentation will be in the theater at the ARM Loxahatchee NWR theater. Reservations are required.
