About the refuge

Port Louisa National Wildlife Refuge is located just outside of Wapello, Iowa. The refuge comprises nearly 10,000 acres, divided into four separate divisions: Big Timber, Louisa, Keithsburg and Horseshoe Bend. All of these divisions are located within the Mississippi Flyway, one of the nation's most important waterfowl migration routes. Refuge staff manage a mosaic of wetlands, bottomland forest and prairie. Each habitat type plays an important role in providing the resources necessary to support a rich diversity of fish and wildlife.
