Prothonotary Warbles Its Way on the Refuge

Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge is busy with bright yellow prothonotary warblers (Protonotaria citrea), sometimes called swamp warblers. Due to land changes throughout their habitat the overall population is shrinking. Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge is covered with standing dead trees. Prothonotary warblers nest in cavities/hollows found in those trees. While primarily an insect eater, such as ants, flies, grasshoppers & spiders, they will also eat seeds, fruit and even the occasional mollusks and snails.
