About Sierra Castro

Sierra Castro joined our Fish and Aquatic Conservation team in June of 2023.  Sierra is a first-generation college student who came to us from Cal Poly Humboldt where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Ecology. During Sierra’s final year of her degree, she completed a Public Lands Corps internship through a partnership developed by a university staff member via an external organization, the Inter-Tribal Student Services program, out of Eureka, CA. During this internship, Sierra worked with Arcata Fish and Wildlife Office staff in a wide variety of activities. She primarily assisted in the juvenile salmon outmigrant monitoring program, but also participated in shorebird and butterfly surveys, outreach events with Cal Poly Humboldt, and field sampling activities with our tribal partners. In her new permanent role, Sierra will be a Fisheries Technician for the FAC program here in Arcata.  She is joining a fantastic team of field staff and will be conducting screw trapping, carcass surveys, redd surveys, and many other activities to help our monitoring and conservation efforts for fish and aquatic species in Northern California and the Klamath Basin.
