Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery Celebrates Monarch Migration at Louisville Zoo’s Flutter Fest

Written By

On Friday, September 12, Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery was thrilled to participate in the Louisville Zoo’s 9th Annual Flutter Fest, a lively and educational event dedicated to celebrating the autumn migration of the monarch butterfly. As these iconic orange-and-black pollinators begin their long journey to the forested mountains of Mexico, the zoo welcomed conservation partners and visitors alike to honor and learn about the wonders of pollination.

The festival, which ran throughout the week, featured daily tabling events in the zoo’s main plaza, where partners set up interactive and educational displays. Representing Wolf Creek NFH, Environmental Education/Outreach Specialist Marsha Hart and volunteer Baylee Hart brought one of the crowd favorites: the Pollinator Wheel!

This engaging activity encouraged visitors to spin the colorful wheel and land on a pollinator-themed question. From “What is a pollinator?” to “Can you name the monarch butterfly's favorite plant?”, the wheel sparked curiosity and conversation. Participants of all ages eagerly stepped up to spin, test their knowledge, and share their favorite pollinators or garden blooms.

After answering a question, each guest was rewarded with a pollinator-themed sticker, booklet, and poster—perfect souvenirs to continue the learning at home.

The event was buzzing with activity, with over 1,500 visitors at the zoo that day and many stopping by the morning outreach session. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with the public and highlight the importance of pollinators in our ecosystems.

Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery is proud to support environmental education through events like Flutter Fest. By engaging with our community and sparking curiosity in future conservationists, we continue our mission to protect wildlife and preserve habitats for generations to come.
