About this Collection

Survey protocol information and resources for the Utah Ecological Services Field Office.

In coordination with the National Park Service, the US Fish and Wildlife Service offers a Mexican Spotted Owl Surveyor Training each year.  The training emphasizes identification of owl habitats and use of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 2012 Mexican spotted owl survey protocol in canyon habitats.  Completion of this survey training, or one similar, is recommended for all currently permitted and future permit applicants who plan to conduct Mexican spotted owl surveys in Utah.

Objectives of the survey training course are to:

  • Ensure consistency and quality of surveys following the Service-approved protocol, for purposes of Endangered Species Act consultation and compliance, and
  • Increase the number of qualified surveyors in Utah, in order to increase our knowledge of the distribution of the owl in Utah.

The 2026 training will be offered on May 5th starting at 8 am at the Nature Center in Zion National Park, Utah. The training will consist of a classroom session (virtual option available) and field visit (limited to 16 participants) with a habitat walk and nighttime calling.
