Seasons of Wildlife

Mallards, widgeon, gadwall, blue-winged teal and pintails seek shelter and feed in the refuge's wetlands throughout the winter months. The cypress trees in and around the brake provide excellent nesting habitat for resident wood ducks in the spring. The refuge also provides important stop-over and nesting habitat for several species of Neotropical migratory birds. Prothonotary, Northern parula, and yellow-throated warblers are just a few of the more common songbirds that can be observed during the spring and summer months.
