Current Operations Due to COVID-19

Due to the CoronaVirus Health Emergency, the Richard S. Bolt Visitor Center located at 4155 Suwannee Canal Road Folkston, GA is closed until further notice. The refuge concession, Okefenokee Adventures, has modified services available, see their website for the most updated information. Some restroom facilities have been closed due to lack of cleaning supplies and personnel to maintain sanitation. Beginning on Saturday June 27, Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge will resume normal hours of operation at the Main Entrance - Suwannee Canal Recreation Area. The refuge opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes at 7:30 p.m. Entrance fee collection has resumed - a 7-day pass is only $5 or a refuge-specific annual pass can be purchased for $15. In addition, the following areas continue to be open and available for public access: 

  • Swamp Island Drive
  • Hiking Trail
  • Chesser Island Boardwalk
  • Chesser Island Homestead Grounds
  • Boat ramp access to the water trails for day-use
  • Kingfisher Landing
  • Suwannee River Sill
  • The Pocket

Overnight camping permit reservations are not being made at this time and all existing permits have been cancelled and refunds issued. Follow us on Facebook (@OkefenokeeWildlifeRefuge) for updated information. 

Visitors should adjust their expectations accordingly and should practice social distancing, personal hygiene, and other behaviors to avoid infection in public areas. Visitors should not rely upon staff, volunteers, or concession staff to ensure their protection from contagious disease.
