Upland habitat at Kern NWR represents remaining fragments of historical habitat found that kangaroo rats inhabited. Most of the remaining kangaroo rats currently survive in marginal habitats compared to the habitats of the large, historical populations in cultivated areas. At Kern NWR, conservation efforts are geared towards restoring these remnant habitats and controlling biological invasions.
