Night surf fishing is an annual activity at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Since refuge grounds close one half hour after sunset, this program is available through a Special Use Permit, which grants access after hours, until midnight. This program provides a unique opportunity to fish the wildlife refuge beach after dark during the time of year when large red drum often move down the coast.
To purchase a Special Use Permit for this activity anglers must bring the following to purchase a pass. Passes are available at the wildlife refuge's Fee Booth on Wednesdays from 11:00am - 3:00pm and Thursdays - Sundays from 8:30am - 3:00pm.
- $35.00, cash or check (made out to "U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service")
- Fishing license, or Fisherman Identification Program number
- Photo ID
For the 2024 season Special Use Permits are being issued from September 18 through the month of October.
