Fishing is a popular pastime on Umbagog Lake and the surrounding rivers, including the Androscoggin, Magalloway and Rapid Rivers.
Regulations or procedures specific to Umbagog NWR include:
- Shoreline fishing near residential areas and remote campsites is prohibited. Campsite permit holders and camp leaseholders may fish from there permitted or leased location.
- Shoreline fishing from islands, except by campers on remote campsite islands, is prohibited. Permit holders for a campsite may fish at their campsite location.
- Shoreline fishing from wetlands or other sensitive habitats is prohibited.
- The use of lead fishing tackle is prohibited per NH and ME state regulations.

Illegal fish stocking is devastating to our native fish populations, especially brook trout and landlocked salmon. White perch, crappie, bass, and northern pike are among many non-native fish species that are now destroying native populations in many New England waters. These predatory species eat our native game fish and harm the aquatic ecosystems. Moving any fish species from one body of water to another without a permit is a crime.
