This is an example of an extremely worn bird band that needed replacement. When bands are this worn, we send them back to the USGS Bird Banding Lab for them to chemically etch the band to retrieve the original information. We place a new band on the bird’s leg so the data and information can continue to be collected. This image was taken as part of the 2022 waterfowl banding operations.
