Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery Provides Fishing for Nursing Home Residents

Written By

For the past 13 years, Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery has hosted a fishing derby for senior citizens at Hatchery Creek. Having always been a big hit, and with several participants expressing their excitement each year, it became evident there may be seniors who wish to participate but physically cannot. To remedy this, staff decided to take the fishing to them!

Project Leader, James Gray, Motor Vehicle Operator, Chris Wilson, and EE/Outreach Specialist, Makenzie Foster, transported Rainbow trout to Fair Oaks Health and Rehabilitation in Jamestown, KY for residents to enjoy a day of fishing in their own backyard. With plenty of bait (and a little patience) several participants were able to reel in a trophy, some were even lucky enough to catch two or three!  For most of the residents, this was an opportunity to rekindle a hobby they once enjoyed regularly, for others it was a chance to catch their very first fish!

2021 was the hatchery’s first time arranging this event, and after a successful day of fishing and by numerous requests of the residents, staff decided to make it an annual occasion. Additionally, this year Wolf Creek NFH will be adding a second location, Summit Manor Nursing Home, to the list. We look forward to many more years of providing a fun event for anglers who may not have the opportunity to get out on the water.
