Crossvine is blooming at Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge

Crossvine (Bignonia capreolata) is a woody vine that is blooming now on Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. Its long bell-shaped flowers are used by hummingbirds. The flowers are two inches long and are yellow on the outside and orange on the inside. The flowers mature into fruit that is eaten by songbirds and small mammals. The plant gets its name from the dark-colored cross in the center of the light-colored pith in the stems.
