The United States Fish & Wildlife Service has issued a violation notice to Chamisa Hills Golf and Country Club as a result of an investigation into waterfowl and migratory bird deaths that occurred in September of 2005 at the golf course in Rio Rancho. The Country Club has until March 15 to respond to the notice.
The investigation established that an employee of Chamisa Hills Country Club released strychnine into one of the ponds on the golf course which led to the poisoning of numerous waterfowl and other migratory birds. The Service had sent several birds to its Fish & Wildlife National Forensics Lab which determined the cause of death.
The Service issued the citation to Chamisa Hills Country Club for illegal take under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, Title 16 United States Code, Section 703. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act makes it unlawful to take, kill or possess migratory birds.
