Wolf Pack Kills Third Cow in Arizona
The interagency Mexican wolf management team has confirmed that a third cow has been killed this week by the eight wolves making up the Gavilan pack (two adults, a yearling and five pups) in the Apache National Forest about 18 miles northeast of Clifton, Arizona. The first cow was found dead on August 9, the second on August 29, and the third on September 7. All were fully grown adults, ranging in age from 6 to 10 years, on a livestock allotment near Coalson Peak.

The team is currently attempting to move the pack away from the livestock. They have stepped up monitoring activities and are providing supplemental food to the pack -- carcasses of elk and deer -- away from the area where the depredation has occurred. The team is also reviewing management options for the pack, including relocation or a return to captivity.
