Wolf Pup Found Dead
On the morning of Tuesday, August 24, the Mexican Wolf Interagency Recovery Team discovered one of two recently captured Pipestem Pack pups dead within its holding pen. Preliminary observations indicated no foul play. However, to determine the actual cause of death, the pups body was shipped to the National Wildlife Health Center in Madison, Wisconsin, for a diagnostic necropsy. Results of the necropsy may take several weeks.
Three more wild born Pipestem pups were captured on August 24. All four Pipestem pups are being transferred to Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge where they will be reunited with their father and yearling sister. Capture efforts for the packs alpha female and any remaining pups continue.
The recapture of the Pipestem Pack is due to their depredation of livestock within their territory. The reunited pack will be held at Sevilleta until a relocation site has been determined.
