The regulations include changes to last years seasons and bag limits which resulted from proposals submitted by individuals, groups, organizations and public agencies. The Federal Subsistence Board took final action on this years regulations at their April meeting after hearing public testimony, reviewing agency staff recommendations, and hearing public comments.
Copies of the Federal Register containing the regulations are available at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Office of Subsistence Management in Anchorage. Additionally, a regulations booklet containing maps of federal public lands and outlining seasons and bag limits will be distributed throughout Alaska in July.
The Federal Government assumed management of subsistence activities on its lands in Alaska on July 1, 1990, after the Alaska Supreme Court ruled the States subsistence priority law unconstitutional. Title VIII of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act establishes a subsistence priority for the taking of fish and wildlife by rural residents on federal public lands in Alaska.
