A group of birders wearing life vests in a boat point and look with binoculars at something in the trees.

Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge offers memorable birding opportunities. Much of the refuge is accessible only by boat; however, we think it's worth the effort! The Refuge is home to numerous local and migratory birds. Check our bird brochure for optimum viewing seasons.  While our only maintained trail is the Kuralt Trail, the Refuge also maintains Conine North and Askew East and West roads. These dirt roads, located on either side of Hwy 13/17 near the Roanoke River Bridge just outside of Williamston, offer a bounty of wildlife viewing/photography opportunities.  There are no designated parking areas on the dirt roads. Park in a way that will not block the gate. For more information, download the Refuge bird list.
