Remnants of Hailstone Lake are now just white alkali depressions at Hailstone National Wildlife Refuge. Heavy metals and salts are concentrated in this former lakebed, where the dam was deconstructed for the system to be free flowing in hopes of flushing this system. Despite alkali soils, during spring areas of the Refuge and adjacent WPA are very productive for waterfowl and waterbirds. Photo by Cortez Rohr/USFWS
