Biologist Marian Bailey, retired from Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge Complex, will reveal the changes that have taken place and continue to shape Grays Harbor National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge was once just intertidal mud. Built from dredging spoils and envisioned as a strategic airfield during World War II, the Bowerman Basin of today is a vital stopping point for millions of migrating shorebirds every year. But will it always continue to serve as one of the Pacific Coast's most important shorebird stopovers? What makes it such good habitat? And what does the refuge do to protect and improve it?
