Approximately 2,600 km of bison and elk trails have been mapped in West Virginia using historical records, including county histories and traveler's accounts. These large animals would have directly altered the landscape through the creation of paths and consumption of vegetation.
Join us for a presentation by Dr. Melissa Thomas-Van Gundy, research forester and project leader of the Ecological Sustainability of Central Appalachian Forests unit of the Northern Research Station. Her research includes stand- and landscape-level projects focused on the restoration and sustainable management of forested ecosystems in the eastern United States. Using this map of major bison trails, she will tell a more complete story of the history of forests and woodlands in West Virginia.
This program will take place at the Visitor Center at 6pm. Stay tuned to our Facebook page and website for updates to this event.
