Events
Join us for guided walks this winter! All walks begin at the observation deck by the visitor center.
- Wednesday Birding: Every Wednesday, rain or shine or snow, meet at 8 a.m. The walk goes from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and covers all the refuge trails. You can join for as long as you like.
- Saturday Nature Walk: Every Saturday at 10 a.m., join a nature walk with Rob Chrisler lasting about 2 hours and meandering about a mile. The topics vary based on what the group sees and what interests them. Borrow binoculars from the visitor center, if you need them.
- Thursday Nature Walks: On the first and third Thursdays of the month at 10 a.m., stretch your legs on the Twin Barns Loop Trail to observe wildlife and seasonal changes at the refuge with Lessie Tompkins. This walk takes no more than two hours. On the second Thursday of the month at 10 a.m., join retired Botanist Bill Arensmeyer for an in-depth look at some of the plants at the refuge.
- Sunday Nature Walks: On the second Sunday of the month, nature enthusiasts and curious minds are invited to join Ed Beck at 10 a.m. to discover the habitats and wildlife of the refuge. This one- to two-hour introduction to the refuge covers wildlife, habitat management, and the refuge’s rich history. On the third Sunday of the month (except in December), walk with Becky Andrade at 9 a.m. through lesser-known parts of the refuge and discover the diversity of plants and animals at the refuge. This walk takes two hours.
- 4th Saturday Birdwatching: Observe the birds that visit the refuge throughout the year. Walk with Julia Dolan at 9 a.m. through a variety of habitats at the refuge. This walk takes about four hours, depending on weather conditions and participant interest. In March, the walk shifts to 8 a.m.
- Additional walks are listed in the event calendar.
