Volunteer Position Overview
About This Position
The volunteer will work either alone, as a group member, or as a group leader while working on refuge property or with in our boundary. The volunteer will have a work schedule to be determined (days and times may be subject to change depending on refuge needs, weather, and projects). The maintenance volunteer duties include but are not limited to- Maintaining over 60 miles off hiking and biking trails clear and trimmed, patrolling the refuge to ensure trails are safe and clear of debris, cleaning-up trash and large debris from refuge property, General refuge maintenance (i.e. changing light bulbs, plumbing, minor woodwork, etc.), keeping repair tools and supplies clean and organized and other refuge-based projects as assigned, Performing general maintenance tasks for the building or buildings, such as window washing, drywall repair, plastering, carpentry, flooring repair, painting and more, Making and installing new furniture or equipment, Conducting routine maintenance on equipment and building systems, Ensuring all safety systems are functioning properly, including smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, Detecting, identifying, and repairing building issues, like basic problems with the building's electrical, plumbing and HVAC system, Making, installing, and maintenance of signs, Inspects and identifies equipment or machines in need of repair, Cleans and assists with upkeep of the facilities, Orders supplies and materials needed for repairs and maintenance, Do garden/yard/trail/refuge property upkeep by mowing lawn, weed eating and hedge trimming, collecting trash, etc. Report to a facilities or maintenance manager for issues, Ensure adherence to quality standards and health and safety regulations, Performs landscaping activities such as, vegetation pruning, and brush clearing, Constructing/repairing erosion control structures, Responsible for proper use of USFWS vehicle, Occasional program support for events such as the Ocelot Conservation day or Stand-by drawing, Conducts safety inspections for trails, walkways, bridges, boardwalks, beaches, staircases,
fences and other trail amenities. Carries out maintenance and repairs of trails, walkways, bridges, boardwalks, beaches, staircases, fences, and other trail amenities using wood, concrete, gravel etc. Performs other duties as needed by refuge staff. The volunteer will conduct each duty as listed using an array of USFWS equipment. Including but not limited to poll saws, hand saw, drill, grinder, table saw, router, drill press, hammers, sledge hammer, power-washer, post driver, blowers, weed eaters, hedge trimmers, push mower, riding mower, zero turn, ORUV, trucks, and trailers, etc.
