Foraging Shallow Waters
Foraging Shallow Water

A Little Blue Heron (Egretta caerulea) hunts for food in shallow water along the edge of Pamlico Sound on Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Little Blue Herons' main diet consists of small fish, such as anchovies, perch, carp, minnows and bass. They also feed on amphibians and crustaceans, dragonflies and grasshoppers and a variety of insects. Invertebrate prey may include crabs and crayfish.
