A raft of REDheads (Aythya americana), plus an American WHITE pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) and BLUE water. Use a little imagination and right on the ponds of Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge you've got a patriotic medley of colors. For the last couple of months there have been thousands of redhead ducks wintering here. The immense white pelicans are one of birders' favorites, they dwarf most migratory birds. In February, Pea Island Refuge begins to lose the thousands of winter migratory birds you can currently see.
