Rules and Policies

There are many interesting things to do and see during your visit to Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge, but it is our number one job to ensure wildlife and the habitat they call "home" is protected. Below are a few guidelines for visitors to help keep both you and the wildlife safe. 

  • The Refuge is open during daylight hours only (from 1 hour before sunrise to 1 hour after sunset).
  • Camping, open fires, feeding or baiting of wildlife, swimming in Refuge waters, or entering any area posted with area closed signs is prohibited.
  • All domestic pets must be leashed or under the owner’s full control at all times.
  • Littering or dumping of garbage, refuse, sewage, debris, or other wastes is prohibited.
  • Taking, possessing, injuring, disturbing, damaging, destroying, or collecting any plant or animal (or attempting these actions) is prohibited.
  • Destroying, defacing, damaging, disturbing, or removing any private or public property, including any natural object or artifact, is prohibited. The use or possession of metal detectors or similar devices is prohibited.
  • Possession or use of alcoholic beverages is prohibited, as defined by local laws.
  • Entering or remaining on the Refuge when under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance is prohibited.
  • Carrying firearms is subject to State, local and Federal laws.  It is unlawful to carry firearms in Government facilities.
  • The speed limit on all Refuge roads, unless otherwise posted, is 15 miles per hour.  State traffic laws that govern the use and operation of vehicles apply on the Refuge.
  • Traveling outside of designated routes of travel is prohibited. Designated routes of travel are shown on the Refuge maps or as posted with road closedno vehicles, or foot traffic only signs.
  • Operating any vehicle or boat that does not bear valid license plates or identification numbers and that is not properly lighted, certified, registered, or inspected according to State laws is prohibited.  ATV's, UTV’s and dirt bikes are prohibited.
  • Stopping or parking a vehicle (either attended or unattended) on a road, trail, or fire lane such that it blocks the free movement of other vehicles is prohibited.

Driving Directions

Pee Dee NWR is located on US Highway 52 North, six miles north of Wadesboro, NC

From Charlotte, NC:  Take US Hwy. 74 East approximately 50 miles to Wadesboro, NC.  Turn left on U.S. Hwy. 52 North, and proceed 6 miles.  The Refuge Office will be on your right.

From Albemarle, NC:  Take US Hwy. 52 South for 22 miles.  The Refuge Office will be on your left.

From Rockingham, NC:  Take US Hwy. 74 West approximately 19 miles to Wadesboro, NC.  Turn right on US Hwy. 52 North, and proceed 6 miles.  The Refuge Office will be on your right.
