The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, in cooperation with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, is seeking public comment on a draft environmental assessment regarding a proposed shooting range in Grand Traverse City, Michigan. This project is proposed by the Michigan DNR for funding through the Service’s Wildlife Restoration Act.
The draft environmental assessment evaluates several proposed sites to develop a safe shooting range that meets American Disabilities Act guidelines to include accessible restrooms, sidewalks and parking.
?It will provide hunters with the opportunity to increase firearm proficiency and safety while allowing recreational shooters to practice their sport in a safe and accommodating environment.
The proposed shooting range will consist of constructing the following shooting lanes:
- 4-25 yard shooting lanes
- 4-50 yard shooting lanes
- 4-100 yard shooting lanes
The purpose of this environmental assessment is to look at the feasibility and potential for environmental consequences associated with the alternatives considered. The environmental assessment was prepared in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act that applies to the actions of all federal agencies.
The draft environmental assessment is available online at: http://www.fws.gov/midwest/news/documents/GT_Shooting_Range_EA.pdf
Hard copies or additional information regarding the range may be obtained from Lori Burford, Michigan DNR Shooting Range Analyst at 989-275-5151, Ext. 2100.
