Discover how to band a duck, build a wood duck nest box, and identify pond critters. Join us for Kid’s Duck Conservation Day at McNary National Wildlife Refuge’s Environmental Education Center on Saturday, August 10th, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Kids of all ages can engage in a variety of hands-on activities related to wildlife conservation including goose calling, Labrador retriever demonstrations, taxidermy, and fire and gun safety. Spotting scopes will be set up to view whatever is on the pond that day—pelicans, cormorants and the baby osprey are favorites. Duck-banding, which is dependent on trapping wild ducks, will begin at 8:00 a.m. sharp and last about 30 to 40 minutes. Kids that participate in all the activities are eligible for prize drawings.
This event is sponsored by the Richland Rod and Gun Club, Ducks Unlimited, Sand and Sage Hunting Retriever Club, and the Friends of the Mid-Columbia River National Wildlife Refuges. The event is free and open to the public.
The McNary National Wildlife Refuge is located at 64 Maple Street in Burbank, Washington. From the Tri-Cities, take I-182 east (becomes Highway 12 outside of Pasco). Just over the Snake River Bridge, exit onto Highway 124 east toward Waitsburg. Travel 1½ miles and turn right on Lake Road. The Education Center is approximately 1 mile further on the right side.
