In 1903, when the Refuge was established, the 5.5-acre Island functioned as a brown pelican rookery with some 10,000 pelicans counted during the peak nesting season. At that time, Paul Kroegel focused on keeping market hunters and egg collectors from decimating the population. One hundred years later, more than a dozen species nest on the Island with less than 100 nesting pairs of pelicans on the Island in the spring.
