The US Fish and Wildlife Service had been overseeing the fur seal industry in the Pribilof Islands prior to World War II. The Service had 19 agents stationed on the Pribilofs when it heard of the Navy’s orders to evacuate and leave nothing of value to the enemy. This included shelter, fur seal pelts, livestock and supplies.
