Chincoteague Bay, managed as part of the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, Virginia, is a productive area for Oysters. On the shallow mud flats Oyster fishermen gather small Oysters which are then re-planed in areas more suited to fast adult growth where they fatten for later harvest. Oyster men are permittees and must use conservation practices when working on refuge managed water areas.
