This species is Lyonia proctorii var truncata, one of five endangered species found in Sierra Bermeja, Lajas. The other endangered species are Eugenia woodburyana, Vernonia proctorii truncata var and Arisitida Aristida portoricensis. Sierra Bermeja is the oldest mountain range in the Caribbean. The eastern part of this mountain belongs to Laguna Cartagena National Wildlife Refuge, including the highest peak called Cerro Mariquita. In Cerro Mariquita you can find the only 12 individuals of this species according to the last inventory of 2009. The species' habitat is subtropical dry forest in an extremely steep slope. Specie's habitat is subtropical dry forest in extremely steep slope.
