A tsunami generated by a powerful earthquake off the coast of Japan struck Laysan island late on Thursday, March 10th and continued for the next few hours into the early morning hours of March 11th.All staff are safe. Employees received warnings and went to higher ground. 4 USFWS & 3 NMFS employees were later evacuated with the considerable assistance of the NOAA vessel Hi'ialaki on March 14th. 2 highly endangered species occur on Laysan, the Laysan duck and the Laysan finch.
