The "Goose Fire" in this photo consumed over 7500 acres and was largely confined to the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. The fire came within 1 3/4 miles of reaching Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. Wildfires like these that burn lodgepole pine and other coniferous trees create building pyrocumulus clouds that can reach thousands of feet into the air. Massive fires like these can also influence and create weather conditions around them. Photo by Cortez Rohr/USFWS
