outhern Appalachian Mountain bogs are a very rare habitat, and in turn are home to several rare plants and animals, including the mountain purple pitcher plant and the endangered mountain sweet pitcher plant and bunched arrowhead.
Service biologists recently visited a handful of bogs in Henderson County, N.C. where we’ve been working with private landowners to support their stewardship of the sites. The visits gave biologists a chance to check in with landowners, discuss bog management, and examine the fruits of recent management work. The sites are in or very near the Service’s Conservation Partnership Areas – areas where the Service is focusing bog conservation efforts through working with private landowners, and, where money is available and a willing seller is present, purchasing land or conservation easements to become part of Mountain Bogs National Wildlife Refuge.
